Council's great EYE-dea meets a little hostility

Plans to install a great, all-seeing eye on the Civic Centre clock tower have met with opposition from New Forest Hobbits. The Hobbits claim the 'Great Eye of Southampton' will cause residents wearing magic rings to fall over, clutch at their chest and perform acts of high gaiety with fellow travelling companions.

"I've got no problem with THE EYE looking over Southampton," said spokeshobbit Bilbo Ziglum (almost real name). "We all know they are basically a desolate post-industrial wasteland anyway. But to threaten our unfettered view of the night's clouds is an outrage."

Council chiefs said the hobbits were scaremongering and that a quote from Adrian Vinson saying "the time of the orc is now" was taken out of context.
